About our tours

Cape Weaver

Cape Weaver

The owners of “Lifers & Twitchers” – Bronwyn Howard & Jock Tame – both hold an intense love of the South African bushveld, having lived and worked in the bush for many years.  It is our pleasure to introduce you to the wonderful animals and birds you may see on safari with us, not to mention the magnificent landscapes you will traverse as you travel to the various areas.  South Africa is a land of incredible diversity and contrast and we have tried to offer something to suit different people.  Our tours focus on wildlife safaris and birding as these are our areas of experties.  We have over 13 years experience in the South African travel/tourism and events industries, as well as the golf course industry.  We are also involved in encouraging golf courses and eco estates to become more environmentally-friendly, become bird sanctuaries and promote the development of natural open spaces, particularly in urban environments.  As we are based in Johannesburg near OR Tambo (Johannesburg) International Airport, our tours focus on areas in close proximity to our base – i.e. Pilanesberg National Park, Kruger National Park, Mpumalanga & Limpopo Provinces and Zululand.  These are also areas we know best.

We have been birding for over 20 years, an activity that has given us much pleasure, especially in South Africa where even those who have been birding for many years can go to a new region and clock up more “lifers”. The South African climate is generally warm, so birding is pleasant even in the early mornings and evenings. Having been involved in the South African travel/tourism industry for many years and, being keen outdoors people, we have developed an excellent knowledge of the country’s natural history (including birds) and know which regions and places will give tourists the best possible nature-based experience.  Our birding tours will take you to well-known birding “hot spots” such as Wakkerstroom but will also include lesser-known small nature reserves where locals go to bird and which often have species lists running into a few hundred.

Our tours include a variety of wildlife experiences and activities. With us, you will visit pristine nature and game reserves, some of which are home to the Big Five. It is no accident that people generally see more raptors and general birds inside reserve boundaries, where natural ecosystems are pristine and well-managed and birds form an integral part of ecosystem dynamics.
